The ocean must’ve thrown me around for hours before it finally tossed me back to the surface. My head popped up above the water, and I sucked in air. It cleared my lungs, closing my gills and leaving me with my two sad, exhausted feet kicking viciously as I tried like hell to stay up.

My panic had abated over a long, long time, as hopelessness replaced it.

Another wave formed, and with it the ocean sent me spinning, rolling through the water until I rolled up over the edge of the waves and crashed face-first into the sand.

My eyes burned, and I coughed up water and sand together.

“Come on, ocean,” I mumbled into the sand.

“It merely responded to your emotions,” Auden’s voice said, from somewhere off to my side.

I didn’t even have the energy to jump or scream. “Of course you’re here.”

He didn’t respond to that, and I wondered if I’d imagined him up.

After a couple hours of ocean-tornado hell, it wouldn’t even be surprising.

“Are you going to pout there all day, or can we go now?”

Apparently he wasn’t just a figment of my imagination.

“If one of us likes to pout, it’s not me,” I muttered back.

A pair of gigantic hands grabbed me by the waist, lifting me up into the air. I screamed as he chucked me out into the water, and the scream morphed as water refilled my lungs.

It was too bad my gun wasn’t waterproof; shooting Auden was starting to sound really freakin’ good.

He appeared beside me in the water, and when the ocean-tornado kicked back up, he seemed to be guiding it.
